Gov. Palin first amendment rights threatened?

http://www.newser.com/story/41487/palin-media-threatening-my-first-amendment-rights.html

Do you think that Gov. Sarah Palin’s first amendment rights were threatened by the media during the presidential campaign? Looking back I believe that the first amendment protects the press and allows them to discuss and report about Palin’s comments. I believe as a public figure what she says is free game to everyone. I don’t think she could say the statements written about her were defaming or libel. Although reports about Palin seemed to be primarily negative, she seems to be under the assumption that the press is obligated to report positive information about an individual.

This article kinds of go along with the discussion in class about the right of the public to receive ideas. I assert that Palin has the right to speak about ideas that are important to her, but as a political candidate the press is allowed to question her speech. Is this a true statement?

Democrat Kay Hagan sues Republican Elizabeth Dole

Apparently, I did something wrong and my blog did not go through properly. This case is about a political ad placed by Elizabeth Dole attacking Kay Hagen calling her anti-christian. In fact Dole’s ad asserts that Hagen is part of the Godless American Political Action Committee. Hagan claims that these statements are damaging and untrue. But, the kicker to the ad is that Dole’s ad uses a voice that is supposed to sound like Hagan saying, “There is no God. Hagen claims that the voice is not hers which is misappropriating her likeness. The ad itself was voted top 10 worst political ads. What do you think?

Defamation suit filed against Dole

I heard about this while listening to NPR tonight. I thought that you might find it interesting due to the election. Dole states in her add that Hagen is supporting people who don't believe in God. Due to the fact that North Carolina is known for being a very religious group of people. This ad could be very damaging to the candidate. But, the kicker is that the people who made the ad for Dole used Hagen voice to say that she don't believe in a God. Hagen proclaims that this is not her voice or words. The political.com people voted this ad as one of the worst ads of 2008.
